This executive house in the Manors of Belleclave gives the family a perfect retreat.

By Melissa Sprouse Browne

The Burlisons took an already beautiful home in northeast Columbia and made it a true showplace. It’s easy to picture yourself in this custom executive home, perfectly situated at the crossroads of The Manors of Belleclave. It’s an amazing property that anyone would be proud to relax in at the end of a long day. With an expansive corner lot, this home offers a bevy of entertainment options, inside and out.

The low maintenance stone and stucco exterior give you a stylish view of the designer touches that await inside. This residential masterpiece has five bedrooms, four bathrooms and is approximately 4,760 square feet.

The family chose to employ a professional named Tim McLendon, who is an interior and exterior designer, artist and composer, to produce the easy living environment they needed.

They were very lucky to find a designer who understood their needs so easily. “We met Tim through a neighbor,” Ryan explained.  “He had designed a few of their rooms, and we were impressed with the finished product and with Tim’s approachable, down-to-earth personality.  So, we asked him to help us. He has an incredible ability to mix in new pieces with what you already have in the house.  For us, the end result was a more creative, attractively designed space than we could have ever dreamed up on our own.”

Ryan and Paula both have busy careers, so a functional design was key in ensuring they had a place to bring friends, family and co-workers. Dropping in at a moment’s notice, as company sometimes will do, can bring stress to even the most tidy and organized household. The Burlisons have created a living arrangement that allows for the messiness of daily life to be controlled and order restored through the placement of organizational tools and storage.

“Our children are precious little disaster areas,” Paula said.  “Sometimes, it looks like a tornado of plastic toys has landed in our living room.  But we wouldn’t have it any other way. Plus, our lovely built-in cabinets provide great hiding places for toy bins!”

From the grand entryway, featuring twenty foot ceilings that carry over into the living and great rooms, you find your way into the heart of the home. “We love the two-story, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the backyard pool and tropical landscaping,” Ryan said.

“That wall of windows is the most prominent feature in the house and the first thing everyone notices when they visit,” Paula added. “But, we had no idea how to dress windows so large.  Tim knew exactly what to do and guided us toward beautiful fabric for window treatments.”

You'll never feel crowded here. With ample space to spread out in the great room, the family can watch television, relax or enjoy playing with their children. The romantic Romeo and Juliet balconies overlook this space from above, giving a touch of Renaissance to the home.

The formal dining room is the perfect setting for dinners with friends and family. It’s large enough for a big table accommodating ten or twelve guests plus any extra chairs you’d need for the little ones. The molding detail here is simply gorgeous.

The kitchen is a very special place in this home. Designed for a gourmet chef, it offers custom cabinetry, striking granite countertops, upgraded stainless steel appliances and a raised bar that overlooks the great room and beyond.

A true eat-in kitchen, Ryan and Paula have ample space to prepare a gourmet meal and enjoy it immediately at the raised bar or at a dining table right by the bay window. The chef's pot rack gives quick access to the essentials, while the many cabinets provide storage for everything else. The full sized pantry keeps supplies right at their fingertips.

“The granite for the kitchen countertops is like nothing we had ever seen,” Paula said. “It fits in seamlessly with the light, bright, and open feel of the kitchen, while still standing out as a total showstopper.” The gold backsplash detail ties in beautifully with the unusual cream and amber of the granite.

When the day is done, the couple retires to the sumptuous master suite with a sitting area, perfect for a late night with a favorite novel. With the master suite located downstairs, they’re assured of total privacy in a soothing retreat. A great closet and an elegantly appointed bath with double vanities, a separate shower and whirlpool tub complete the space.

You can get lost in this spa-like master bath. With plenty of counter space, Paula and Ryan easily share the double vanity. A great feature is the whirlpool bath, a perfect place to soak away the stress of working full time and caring for two sweet children.

A second bedroom is also located on the main floor for convenience.

Elegant details abound on both floors. The upstairs living area is a flexible layout, offering many possible uses. Three bedrooms, a playroom, second living room and finished room over the garage give the Burlisons plenty of options. The three car garage and exterior utility building provide storage for vehicles, home equipment and toys for both youngsters and adults.

This home is in a gated community and features a high tech security system complete with eight cameras that may be viewed remotely.

When they’re ready to entertain, this home gives them a number of spaces to get together with friends. From the moment you walk outside, you realize you're someplace special. Great care has been taken to ensure the experience of their guests is simply amazing. From the saltwater pool, the tropical landscape and the covered porch, there's a place for everyone to enjoy the beautiful South Carolina weather.  When they’re ready to move the festivities outdoors, the rear covered porch is a comfortable place to gather out of the sun. But the main attraction, of course, is the saltwater pool, surrounded by extensive decking and tropical landscaping.

There's even a play area for the children, far enough away from the pool that they don’t have to worry about anything. The outside is complete with sprinkler and French drainage systems. The large fenced-in backyard lets the Burlisons appreciate life in their own private retreat.
