Forest Acres hair salon takes an innovative approach to hair and style

By Katie Gantt

If your finger is at all on the cultural pulse, you’ve likely found yourself at least contemplating – if not all out reevaluating – certain aspects of your life: your habits, routines, lifestyle, goals, etc. as we enter a new year. But there is something a little special about this particular new year; 2020 marks the beginning of a new decade, too!

Many find themselves taking an honest look in the mirror around this time, to see what they might want to tweak – or in some cases, overhaul. One of the simplest things you can do that makes a dramatic impact on your appearance is switch up your hairstyle. As the iconic Coco Chanel once famously said, “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.” Men, that goes for you too. If you’re looking for a place to expertly assist you in this very personal transformation, you’d be wise to consider Columbia’s very own Austral Salon, located on North Beltline in the heart of beloved Forest Acres.

Locally owned and managed by married couple Tim and Charleane Shealy, Austral Salon is home to a team of talented professionals that focus on each client as an individual, considering the specific needs and wants of each person that takes a chair. They adhere to the highest standards of quality and cuts, color and styling. All stylists receive ongoing training in the latest trends, techniques, products, and more while never forgetting the impacts that the classics can have too.

Services include the standard haircut, shampoo, and blow dry; blow outs and styling; an avocado oil treatment; Inca oil treatment; essential oil treatments; full color; highlights and/or lowlights; keratin straightening treatment; Brazilian straightening treatment; bridal services; special occasion services (think updos for weddings or proms); facial waxing; hair extensions, and more!

The Shealy’s consider their team of stylists to be the crown jewel of their operation and want to give readers an opportunity to get to know them a little better. After all, one’s hair stylist oftentimes becomes a friend and confidant. Keep reading to find out what makes these stylists tick, what they might be found doing in their off-time and what hair trends need to stay and which need to go!

Grace Chinners

Grace’s favorite hair-trend that’s currently hot is the “balayage” color technique. She was born and raised in Lexington and when she’s not at work she can often be found doing one of her favorite things: sleeping. Her favorite movie is “Another Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song” and her favorite quote is, “You may be pretty, but if the world was blind who would you impress?”

Scarlett Jones

Scarlett wishes, of all the hair trends, that bangs would just go away. When she’s not at work, she can usually be found online shopping or sleeping. Her favorite movie is “The Blind Side” and her favorite quote is “Every day is an opportunity to do better.” The best advice she ever received is: Don’t let your bad days make you feel like you have a bad life.

Madisyn Brazell

Madisyn became a hair stylist because she wanted to get to meet new people while exercising her creativity on a daily basis. Her favorites of the current hair trends are balayage and the textured “lob” (a long bob). She hails from West Columbia and when not at work can be found at the gym or spending time with her family. Her favorite local hangout is Chick-fil-A and the best hair advice she has for readers is: Don’t try to cut and color your own hair! Leave it to the professionals.

Tim Shealy

Tim, the owner of Austral Salon, would like to see the trend of silver hair go away forever. When he isn’t at work, he can usually be found reading. His favorite book is Pillars of the Earth. The best advice he ever received is: Details are the only thing that separates us from them. His number one hair-styling tips for readers is to “Finish the blow dry – get it all the way dry! Most people don’t.”

Lindsay Pfentner

Lindsay knew she wanted to be a hairstylist growing up while she watched her aunt do hair. Her hometown is Buffalo, New York and when she isn’t at work, she can often be found going on adventures as a family with her husband and son. Her favorite quote is “She is clothed in strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future.” Of the currently trending hair styles, her favorite is a more natural balayage.

Kortney Wilkes

Kortney grew up in Gainsville, Georgia and became a hair stylist to express her creative side. When she isn’t working, she can be found doing a lot of traveling. Her favorite quote is “Good hair ain’t cheap and cheap hair ain’t good.” She has a piece of advice for you when styling your hair at home: Always let your hair cool after using heat tools and before your brush or use your fingers to comb through your hair.
