Columbia offers parents a wide range of choices when infants and children need medical attention

by Warren Hughes

Almost 11,000 babies are born each year in the Midlands of South Carolina. With a growing demand for maternal and pediatric specialists, the region boasts a comprehensive and advanced health care system providing for mothers and their children.

Delivering approximately 3700 babies a year, Lexington Medical Center offers a variety of services for expectant moms, babies and children. The hospital has a 20-bed, Level II Special Care Nursery with personnel, advanced equipment and capabilities to care for all infants as well as those born as early as 32 weeks. Nursing staff are specially trained in neonatal advanced life support and provide care with the support of an on-staff, board-certified neonatologist.

LMC is the only hospital in the Midlands with certified nurse midwives for expectant mothers. The hospital is also home to an innovative doula program, the first of its kind in the Southeast. A doula is a birth coach who offers mothers comfort and reassurance during labor and delivery. Doulas are a free service for any woman having a baby at Lexington Medical Center.

LMC is now undergoing the largest hospital expansion in South Carolina history. A 545,000 sq.-ft. new patient care tower will open in 2019 and become the new home of the mother/baby department. In the special care nursery, the hospital’s tiniest patients will have private rooms. Research shows that private rooms provide more bonding opportunities for mothers and their babies, leading to better outcomes for babies’ growth and lower infection rates.

Palmetto Health Children's Hospital, the state’s first freestanding children’s hospital, is a major regional pediatrics referral center. With experts in more than 30 special fields, it serves approximately 150,000 patients annually.

Designed as a bright, happy place that feels like home, the hospital features family-centered patient rooms, playrooms and family spaces making it easy for parents to stay close to their children throughout hospital stays and during outpatient treatments. Its dedicated Children's Emergency Center provides central South Carolina with the most technologically-advanced specialized care.  Thirteen examination rooms, a pediatric resuscitation room and two trauma bays feature customized child-sized technology and equipment. The hospital was the first Level II Pediatric Trauma Center in South Carolina verified by the American College of Surgeons. It is located at Palmetto Health Richland, 7 Medical Park Rd., 803-296-5437, palmettohealthchildrens.org.

The Palmetto Health Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) serves more than 800 premature and critically ill babies from 16 counties in South Carolina. As only one of five Level III NICUs in South Carolina and the designated Regional Perinatal Center, the NICU at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital provides expert care for the smallest and sickest babies in a 16-county region. Approximately 800 critically-ill and premature babies are cared for each year by a team of highly skilled staff and physicians.

Palmetto Health’s Birthplace alone welcomed more than 5500 babies last year. Spacious, private birthing rooms feature special beds for mothers to deliver their babies, and postpartum rooms focus on the special needs of new mothers. The high-risk obstetrics unit is specially designed to assist mothers who are in expected labor, premature labor or who are sick. The Nesting Place unit is designed for modified mother and baby care, sometimes called couplet care. One nurse cares for both mother and baby in the Nesting Place, and as long as your infant’s condition is stable, you may keep your baby with you at all times. Birthplace locations include Palmetto Baptist downtown, Baptist Parkridge, Palmetto Richland and Tuomey in Sumter.
