Merrill Gardens

by Kara Price

Seniors at Merrill Gardens Columbia enjoy the luxury of a brand-new apartment building, a community designed to meet the individual needs of its residents, and all the excitement of downtown living. Located in the center of the bustling BullStreet development, Merrill Gardens is just a hop away from top-notch medical care and many of Columbia’s brightest attractions. For recreation, residents frequent the State House grounds, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, the South Carolina State Museum, Soda City Market, Williams Brice Stadium, and Segra Park – home of the Fireflies and a safe, convenient walking track residents love. Coffee shops, boutiques, and some of the city’s best restaurants await just a few steps beyond the front door.

Location is a big draw at Merrill Gardens and so are the many lifestyle options available to senior residents. Both independent living and memory care are offered. There is a month-to-month rental option that provides freedom and flexibility. The dedicated Active Living Director oversees a full activities calendar of events to include chair yoga, giant crosswords, day trips, ice cream socials, skits, strength training, movies, bingo, swimming, wine and cheese tastings, TED talks, scenic drives, pet therapy, bread baking, national food day celebrations, jazz concerts, Bible studies, and picnics – just to name a few.

The upscale residence is apartment style offering studios, one bedrooms, and two bedrooms. The first residents moved in in July of 2020 and there is current availability in both independent and memory care. “The building itself is really standout,” said General Manager Wilson Anhar. “Our dining system stands out too. We do meals differently than most places,” he said. “We don’t have any scheduled mealtimes. Instead, we have a program called All Day Dining. We start serving breakfast at 7 a.m. and the dining room is open for dinner until 7 p.m. Residents can eat whatever they want, whenever they want. The menu is restaurant style and offers a choice of soup, salad, entrée, desert, and beverage for lunch and dinner. Menu items change by the season.”

The community boasts many amenities. Residents enjoy a library, salon, movie theater, rooftop patio, fitness area, onsite maintenance, in-house care agency, 24-hour staffing, a resident call system, transportation options, weekly housekeeping, and wellness programs. They’re small pet friendly too!

Interested seniors or care givers can take a virtual tour of the premises online via the Merrill Gardens’ website. In-person tours are back open too. The website also offers a simple four-minute assessment that can help you make more informed choices and match your needs with the right level of support for you or your loved one.
